Obituary for Betty Branan Gann

Betty Branan Gann
Betty Branan Gann, 89, died June 16 at St. Mary’s Hospice House after a brief illness. She is the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. C.N. Branan of Lexington, Ga.
She graduated from Meson Academy in Lexington, after which she attended both Wesleyan College and Madison College (James Madison Univ.) for one year each. She transferred to the University of Georgia where she graduated in 1951 with a BFA in music education. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority and Sigma Alpha Iota music fraternity.
She began her working career teaching music in Atlanta public schools for a short while. A few years later, she was hired by Otis Elevator (Atlanta) in the Accounting Dept. and worked her way up to management positions. She retired from Otis in 1986 after serving her last six years at the Dallas, TX office. She returned to Athens and began working for UGA Business Services where she again retired when she was in her 70s.
She was a long-time member of Beech Haven Baptist Church and the Glory Class. She was an accomplished singer and pianist, an avid bridge player and sports fan, and loved to travel–a true southern lady who was generous and loving to her family. She is preceded in death by her son, David Robert Gann and survived by one daughter, Susan Sheffield (Phillip Sheffield); three grandchildren, Audra Swindell (Edmond, OK), Hunter Sheffield (Okeechobee, FL), and Shaun Gann (USAF); and three great grandchildren.
Family will receive friends at Lord and Stephens West, Monday (6:00-8:00). Graveside services will be held at Clark Cemetery, Lexington, GA on Tuesday, June 19 at 11:00. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Clark Cemetery fund, c/o Lexington Baptist Church, 103 W. Church St., Lexington, GA 30648.
