Obituary for Cecil Gaines Owens

Cecil Gaines Owens, 83, of Athens, died Sunday, December 27, 2015.

Born in Oconee County, he was the son of the late Adgel G. Owens and Annie Parten Owens. Mr. Owens was a Veteran of the Korean War, and a retired Deacon of Northside Baptist Church. He was an avid NASCAR fan, and was the flagman for 25 years at Athens Speedway. Most of all, Mr. Owens loved the Lord and his family. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Onita Wray of North Carolina and Frances Tate of Athens.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Myra “Tootsie” Owens; two daughters, Tammy Hoopaugh (Danny) and Kim Owens (Scott Henson); one sister, Serena Nation; three grandchildren, Josh Parham, Nicholas Stephens (Grace) and Chad Hoopaugh; three great grandchildren, JT Hoopaugh, Kayla Williamson and Jayden Hoopaugh; his beloved dog, Rufus; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday December 29, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Lord and Stephens, West with Rev. Ronnie Healen and Rev. Jon VanRider officiating. Interment will follow in the Barrow Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Nick Stephens, Josh Parham, Danny Hoopaugh, Chad Hoopaugh, Tommy Tate, Scott Henson and honorary pallbearers, JT Hoopaugh and Gene Stephens. The family will receive friends Monday, December 28, 2015 from 6 until 8 PM at the funeral home.
