J.Alton Butler
Alton Butler
It is with great sadness, the family of Jesse “Alton” Butler, 79, of Watkinsville, announces he passed away peacefully on August 15, 2018.
He was born in Watkinsville in 1939 to Jesse Arthur Butler and Blanche Jackson Butler. He was preceded in death by his dear sister, Ann Giles. Alton is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Brooke & Shaun Van Eyk of Seattle, WA, his two beloved grandchildren, Daphne and Thad and his nephew, Ken Giles. The family appreciates the compassion and loving care provided by Ginger Giles, Celeste Brown and Jill Banyai.
Alton graduated with a Bachelor’s of Business Administration from the University of Georgia in 1961. He served in the US Army at Ft Jackson, SC following college. Alton retired as the Fiscal Officer and Treasurer at the Georgia Department of Agriculture after a 31 year career. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and Union Christian Church. He loved UGA football, tennis and vacationing with his family.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, August 19th at 3:00 pm at Oconee Chapel, 2370 Hog Mountain Road, Watkinsville, GA 30677. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2:00 until 3:00 pm. His 1957 classmates of Oconee County High School and his Antioch Christian Church Sunday School Class members will be recognized as Honorary Pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, those who desire may make memorial donations in memory of Alton to the American Lung Association.
