Obituary for Ann Giles

Ann Elizabeth Butler Giles, 87, died June 10, 2018

A native of Oconee County, she was the daughter of Jesse Arthur Butler and Blanche Jackson Butler. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alcy Shannon Giles and her daughter, Holly Elizabeth Giles.

Living in Watkinsville her entire life, Mrs. Giles was extremely committed to and active in her community. She was a charter member of the Pilot Club of Oconee County and was currently a member emeritus. While an active member, she held many offices at the local and state level. She retired from Sun Trust Bank where she started her career as a bank teller at National Bank of Athens and eventually became a Vice President, one of the first women to reach that position. She was active in the professional organization, Credit Women International, where she worked to educate and advance women in finance.

She had a strong Christian faith and was a long time member of Antioch Christian Church where she served as President of the Christian Women’s Fellowship, Sunday School Teacher and avid attendee of social and service events.

After her retirement, she took up tennis and travel and made many new friends, which she added to her wide circle of old friends and family. She enjoyed hosting meals and parties at her home and had a vast library of stories and devotions which she richly shared.

Survivors include her son, Durham Kenimer Giles of Davis, CA; her brother, Jesse Alton Butler of Watkinsville, her grandchildren, Sarah Elizabeth Giles and William Durham Giles of Portland, OR and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Her life was enriched by her friendship with Marvin Sims of Arnoldsville, GA and close love and care from her niece, Ginger Randall. The family appreciates the compassion and care for her from Carrie Gibson, Jill Banyai, Sarah Nell Hull and Celeste Brown.

Visitation will Monday, June 11, 2018 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Lord and Stephens West. Services will be held on Tuesday, June 12, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Antioch Christian Church. Interment to follow in the church cemetery. Contributions may be made to the Judy Giles Memorial Scholarship Fund at Antioch Christian Church, P.O. Box 1273, Watkinsville, GA 30677. Flowers are also optional.

Lord and Stephens, WEST, is in charge of arrangements.
