Condolences

Condolence From: Andrew Dolan
Condolence: I also just learned of Jack's passing today. I knew him when he worked here at the USFWS-Lafayette ES office in SW Louisiana, and he was always the epitome of the soft spoken southern gentleman. I took him fishing offshore in the Gulf of Mexico and greatly enjoyed his company during that long day on the water. Please know that he will be missed both within and outside of the Fish and Wildlife Service.

Condolence: This is a late post. I only just learned of Jack’s passing tonight. I worked with a Jack in the Lafayette FWS ES office. My first encounter was rushing him to the ER when he first arrived. I got to know Jack through work - he was a dedicated conservationist and loved to share it. I learned from him. He was a man of integrity and I loved that. Then I got to know him more personally- he built a deck on my house that will outlast the house I’m sure. I got to hear about the cabin he was building in Georgia. I still have river rocks that Jack brought me from there. We were both dog lovers big time- and when he stayed with my husband and I during Hurricane Rita- I got to know Booker, a southern gentleman of a dog who I’m sure learned his manners from Jack. I am so sad to think Jack is gone but am grateful that I knew him. He was one of those people that touches us and leaves us a better person. I will think of him each time I pass my GA river rocks and like to think he is up there with loved ones- including his precious Booker. I cried when he left for another job and I am crying now. Although sadly belated, my thoughts and prayers go out to his family. He will be missed!

Condolence: Jack and I well remember Jack from his high school days in Butler where he was an exceptionally good student and a pleasure to teach. And too, we recall how polite and well mannered he was. We were not surprised to read of his academic and work accomplishments. We are truly saddened by his passing and send our heartfelt condolences to all his family.

Condolence From: Kay McCutcheon
Condolence: We are all stunned and saddened by the death of our friend and colleague, Jack Culpepper. The Friends of Carolina Sandhills Refuge are much indebted to Jack for all of his hard work to assist our group on numerous projects. His passion for the longleaf pine ecosystem was infectious and he was gracious enough to share his knowledge with visitors, volunteers, and friends. We will surely miss his smiling face at our annual Youth Fishing Day in June. Kay McCutcheon, President, Friends of Carolina Sandhills Refuge

Condolence From: Chuck Hunter
Condolence: Jack will be deeply missed by his FWS colleagues and many others. We are proud of the fact that forestry as we practice it on National Wildlife Refuges is strongly science-based, and it is important to note this was especially true from how Jack approached the task at hand. Personally, I will miss our conversations on forest ecology and especially our shared interest in fractal geometry as one way to understand natural patterns in nature including forest structure. My sincerest condolences to jack's family.

Condolence From: Doug and Scarlett Mason
Condolence: Jack will be missed by all who knew him. When I first met Jack it was evident he had a love for animals, the outdoors, fishing and cooking. We shared many recipes and childhood stories while together. I will always remember the many times of him coming to find me and sharing a story of something he had found whether it was a rock, a snag or beautiful flower. FWS lost a great caretaker and I lost a friend.
