Obituary for Karen Lee Tinsley

Karen Lee  Tinsley
Karen Tinsley, 45, of Watkinsville died Tuesday, April 3, 2018.
Born in Augusta, GA, she was the daughter of Roger W. Tinsley (and wife, Janet) of Syracuse, NY and Judy Tinsley McPeak (and husband, William) of Hull, Mass.
Karen grew up in Syracuse, NY and graduated from Fayetteville-Manlius High School. She received her bachelor’s degree from Syracuse University and her master’s and doctorate from University of Georgia in Athens.
Karen was employed by UGA as program director of the Georgia Initiative for Community Housing and director of the Housing and Demographic Research Center. In 2017, she received the national Housing Impact Award for her tireless work in her field.
Karen was an avid cyclist, member of the Nitty Gritty Bike Band, and enjoyed playing tennis and reading.
In addition to her father and mother, survivors include her siblings, Susan Schumer, of Wellesley, Mass., Sarah Tinsley, Gwilym Jones, Kathleen Alpha, John McPeak, Kevin McPeak, niece and nephew, Jessica and Mathew Schumer and her partner, Art Snow.
A celebration of Karen’s life will be held Monday, April 9, 2018 at the UGA Chapel at 2pm. A reception will follow at the Georgia Center.
A scholarship fund has been set up in Karen's name, make checks payable to UGA Foundation. Be sure to put "Karen Tinsley Fund" in the memo line.
