Obituary for Herbert Furman "Herb" Johnson

Herbert F. "Herb" Johnson, Jr., 87, died January 25, 2018.

Mr. Johnson was born May 13, 1930 to H. F. and Mardell Sanders Johnson. He graduated from Athens High School, where he played football and participated in many other activities. He attended Jacksonville Junior College in Jacksonville, FL. Mr. Johnson joined the Air Force and spent most of his time in Germany, but was sent to Lake Charles, Louisiana to contribute to the organization of a SAC Air Force Base. After being honorably discharged from the military, he gained employment with Continental Emsco Company, a division of Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company, and worked in Houston, Dallas and New Orleans.

Mr. Johnson was a member of Memorial Baptist Church in Metairie, Louisiana, where he was ordained as deacon in November 12, 1967. Mr. Johnson returned to Athens in 1993 and moved his membership to Prince Baptist Church, where he continued to be active as long as his health would allow. He was a member of the Word Bearers Bible Class at Prince Avenue Baptist Church and the Gideon's International - Athens West Camp.

Funeral services will be Monday, January 29, 2018 at 2:00 PM at the chapel of Lord and Stephens, WEST, with Rev. Doug Nix officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park.

Mr. Johnson and his wife, Wilma Grubb Johnson, were married June 7, 1951. In addition to her, Mr. Johnson is survived by a brother, Donald (Becky) Couch; a sister-in-law, Mildred Grubb Bailey; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will receive friends Monday from 1:00 until 2:00 PM at the funeral home.
