Obituary for Bonnie O'Neal Smith (Smith)

Bonnie O’Neal Smith, of Hull, passed away peacefully on January 14, 2018. He was 85.

Mr. Smith was born in the home on January 18, 1932, to Buddy and Eula (Rousey) Smith and raised in Point Peter in Oglethorpe County. He was a graduate of Athens High School.

Mr. Smith was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served as a Corporal from 1952-1954 and during the Korean War. He was a member of AMVETS Post 10 and VFW 2872. He was previously employed by First National Bank of Athens and Oconee State Bank. He was a member of Victory Baptist Church in Hull, GA.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Peg Smith. Survivors include a companion of 22 years, Opal Sherwood; sister, Mildred Hammond; son, Steven (Eileen) Smith; daughter, Leslie (Randy) Carter; seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two nieces; one nephew; stepchildren, Janice Thornton, Janet Bagwell, Judy Denney, Susan Powers, Gale Scarborough, Sharon Newhart, Tina Justice, and Ricky, Kenny, and Harold Chamberlain; and numerous step-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Wayne Hammond, Benjamin Lawhorn, Matt Phillips, Kevin Poe, Eli Smith, and Jonah Watson. AMVETS members will serve as honorary pallbearers.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 16, 2018, from 6 until 8 PM at Lord & Stephens East in Athens, GA. The funeral service will take place at Lord & Stephens East Chapel on January 17, 2018, at 1:00 PM with a graveside service to follow at Evergreen Memorial Park.
