Obituary for William Dale "Bill" Givan

William “Bill” Dale Givan was born on December 12, 1935 and finally made a decision to leave this life on December 23, 2017. Born and raised in Liberty, TN, he was the son of the late Emmons Dale Givan and Blanche Jacobs Givan. He was a graduate from the University of Tennessee with his Bachelor in Agriculture Education and Master’s Degree in Agriculture Economics. He earned his PhD in Agricultural Economics from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg, VA.
Bill was employed with the University of Georgia, working in the College of Agriculture Extension Service. His roles were varied and he did everything from teaching classes to research to helping the farmers succeed with their money management. He filmed a video called a “Day at the Bank” that is legendary in the College of Agriculture. In later years, after retirement, he taught a Freshman Odyssey class at UGA. He always talked about those students and how much he enjoyed teaching them. Always loyal to the Georgia Bulldogs, (even though he was a Tennessee graduate), he had season tickets for everything from Football to Gymnastics. He could be seen sporting the red and black at almost every game.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Martha Ann Watson Givan; daughters, Ellen (Tony) Martin, and Jennifer Givan; two grandchildren who were the light of his life, Jon Beckom and Courtney Martin; and sister, Margaret McReynolds.
Services will be held Thursday, December 28, 2017 at Milledge Avenue Baptist Church. The family will receive visitors at 1:00 pm with services at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, the Alzheimer’s Association or the charity of your choice in his name.

Lord and Stephens, EAST, is in charge of arrangements.
