Obituary for Willie R. "Billy" Porterfield

Willie R. "Billy" Porterfield, 90, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away peacefully on November 15, 2017.
Born on April 4, 1927 to Leona Maxey & Henry "Babe" Porterfield, he is survived by his wife of 69 years, Juanita Hammond Porterfield. He was a lifelong resident of Watkinsville, Ga.
A loving and generous man, he gave of his time, talents & resources to his family, church and community. A veteran of World War II he served in the US Navy. He began his career in the brokerage business in 1948 retiring in 1993 as a Vice President with Merrill Lynch in Athens, Ga. An outstanding public servant he served on the Watkinsville city council for 30 consecutive years, most of those as Mayor Pro Tem. He was a faithful member of the Watkinsville First United Methodist Church serving as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for a number of years.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Ford Porterfield and his wife, Beverly, and a sister, Dot Weirauch and her husband, Charles.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Gary (Linda Carol) & Steve (Monica), grandsons, Travis Porterfield (Elizabeth) & Tyler Porterfield (Sara), granddaughters, Brooke Doucette (Keith) & Brittany Jones (Tim) and 6 great-grandchildren, sister, Doris Thornton (Gene) and brother, Bobby Porterfield, and a number of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers are Travis Porterfield, Tyler Porterfield, Keith Doucette, Doug Weirauch, Mike Thornton and Bruce Glenn. Honorary pallbearers will be the Progressive Sunday School Class.
Funeral services will be held in the Chapel of Lord & Stephens West on Monday, November 20, at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be Sunday, November 19, from 5-8 p.m. at Lord & Stephens West.
