Obituary for Catheryne Grogan (Russell)

Catheryne Mundy Grogan, 95, of Athens, GA, released her tenacious hold on life November 7, 2017. Mary Catheryne Mundy was born on Bluff Street in Rockmart, her family home, on November 30, 1921.  She was the daughter of Clifton Grady and Agnese Russell Mundy.  Clifton was a local lawyer and also served as Mayor of Rockmart.  Agnese was appointed to the job of Postmaster and served there until she retired in 1964.  Catheryne had two younger sisters, Lucille and Mignon.
Catheryne graduated from Rockmart High School and attended Shorter College, in Rome, GA.

In 1938, Catheryne married George W. Franklin and moved to East Liverpool, OH for one year. Together, they had a daughter, Ann. In 1946, Catheryne married James Davis “J.D.” Grogan; two years later, they gave birth to her second daughter, Crisanda.

During World War II, Catheryne worked for J.P. Allen and Goodyear Mills (now Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company) where she met J.D. She spent the majority of her career at Atlanta Gas Light Company, working in both the Rockmart and Cedartown, GA, offices for thirty years before retiring as Office Supervisor.

Throughout her life, Catheryne was a member of the Rockmart First United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School, sponsored the Methodist Youth Fellowship for three generations, and belonged to the Grogan-Black Sunday School Class. She was often the popular chaperone for school dances, band bus trips, and college trips. Catheryne was a member of the Garden Club and loved working in her yard and arranging flowers. She was also a member of the William Witcher Chapter of the NSDAR. She played in numerous bridge clubs and was a member of the Rockmart Women’s Club. She traveled extensively through Europe and Canada with friends and family; her love for Hawaii took her there seven times.

Catheryne was both strong and gentle, stern and loving. She took care of her family and friends.

In 2000, Catheryne moved to Iris Place Independent Living in Athens, GA, enjoying her time with new friends and taking advantage of the life of a college town.

Catheryne is predeceased by her spouses, her sisters Lucille Mundy Durham and Mignon Mundy Johnson, and her son-in-law, Teddy Shanks. Known affectionately as “Kakin” by her family, Catheryne is survived by her daughter Ann Campbell and husband, Wayne Campbell, of Kansas City, MO, and by her daughter Cris Shanks of Athens, GA. She is also survived by five grandchildren and their spouses: Scott and Melanie Campbell, of Platte City, MO; Greg and Renee Campbell, of Rogers, AR; Jeff and Catalin Stelian-Shanks of North Bergen, NJ; Sam and Philecia Shanks of Charlotte, NC; and Jenilee and Renata Stanley-Shanks of Richmond, VA; seven great-grandchildren: Aaron (Martha) and Carman Campbell, Matthew and Bradley Campbell; Thomas and Cooper Shanks; and Tristan Stanley-Shanks; and four great great-grandchildren: Catherine, Shannon, Marie, and Connor Campbell.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the First United Methodist Church in Rockmart, GA.

Services will be held December 1, 2017,at the Rockmart First United Methodist Church with Visitation at 1:00 followed by the Celebration of Life at 2:00.  Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery.
