Condolence: My mother Elsie Matthews was John's bride in the late summer of 1937.. Mock Wedding Gay Affair - Eastport, Sept. 2,- The "Tom Thumb Wedding" staged at the Institute of Christ Episcopal church, Tuesday evening of this week, was one of the most delightful children's programs presented here this season. Under the direction of Mrs. Florence Rose, nearly a score of tiny youngsters presented a wedding scene that was captivating. Little Elsie Matthews was the charming bride and her groom was played by John Riley. They were attended by Inez O'Dell, maid of honor, and Arthur Varney, best man. Bridesmaids were Sally Emery, Margaret Sabine, Belle Small and Geraldine Mitchell. Ushers were Robert Zabe, Bruce Bowden, Hollis Matthews and William Healey. The part of a very dignified minister was taken by Robert Emery and the whole affair finished off with a diminutive flower girl, Harriett Varney. To attempt to describe the scene adequately would be impossible for the fragile lovliness of the little bride in her wedding veil and orange blossoms and the proud dignity of her groom in his formal wedding attire was one to see rather than read. The wedding march was played by Kenneth Matthews. After the ceremony, a musical program was presented by a group of young people of the town....."
