Obituary for Rose Mary Avants

Rose Mary Avants
Rose Mary Scaife Avants, entered Heaven Wednesday, October 4, 2017. She died peacefully at her home surrounded by her family. She was born September 23, 1938 in Marvell, Arkansas. She was the daughter of the late John William Scaife and Lena King Scaife. She was also preceded in death by her brother, John Scaife.
Rose Mary is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Jimmy Avants, her sister, Sue Ellenburg, two sons, Gary (Sharon) Avants of Athens, Clyde (Nakyung Lee) Avants of Athens, four grandchildren, Tara Avants, Melissa (Casey) Crowe, Jordan Avants and Mary Stuart (Chris) Hulsey, three great grandchildren, Lily Grace Crowe, Jaiden Dickinson and Timberly Rose Avants. She is also survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Rose Mary attended Marvell High School in Arkansas. After graduation she moved to Little Rock, Arkansas and attended Draughon School of Business. It was during this time that she met the love of her life, Jimmy Avants. They courted a short three months before becoming engaged. They started their family in Little Rock, where her two sons, that she adored, were born.
In 1960 Jimmy accepted a job with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and they moved to Washington D.C. In 1969, they were transferred to Athens, GA. Rose Mary began working at Southern Bell, later known as AT&T. She loved her job as a phone operator and she shared humorous stories she encountered from customers. In her retirement, she was a member of the Red Hat Sweeties and enjoyed their get togethers. Rose Mary and Jimmy travelled extensively but especially loved visiting New England. She loved The State Botanical Garden of Georgia and spent many hours walking the trails with Jimmy and her grandchildren. She was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church of Athens.
Rose Mary was soft spoken and reserved except when she was with her grandchildren. She loved being “Grandma Rosie” and enjoyed spoiling them. She happily attended their numerous football games, softball games, basketball games, tennis matches not to mention dance recitals and plays.
We have truly been blessed to have had Rose Mary in our lives. You never saw her without a smile on her face and Jimmy by her side. Their 58 years of devotion to each other has been a perfect example of true love for all of her family.
We would like to thank Care to Continue and all of the CNA’s that have helped care for Rose Mary and Compassionate Care Hospice. We would also like to thank our caregiver, Marylou Anglin. All of the caregivers were so gentle, patient and loving.
In lieu of flowers, please give to the American Cancer Society or the State Botanical Garden of Georgia.
The family will receive friends from 10:00AM until 11:00AM on Friday, October 6, 2017 at Lord & Stephens East and a graveside service will follow at Athens Memory Gardens. Rev. Rick Standard will officiate.
Lord & Stephens East is in charge of arrangements. www.lordandstephens.com
