Dorothy Ann Gorman (Yantz)
Dorothy Ann Gorman, 85, of Maxeys, Georgia, died Saturday, September 16, 2017 at St. Mary's Hospice House in Athens, Georgia.
Dorothy Ann Yantz was born in Flush, Kansas to the late Ben and Albertha Yantz. After the unexpected death of her father in 1942, Dorothy moved to Manhattan, Kansas with her mother and younger sisters. Her older brother Bill Yantz stayed and worked on the 400 acre farm. After graduating from high school she met the love of her life Joseph (Joe) W. Gorman and the two married on September 2, 1950. They were married for 53 years until Joe's death on July 26, 2003. After Joe graduated from Kansas State University in 1951 they moved to the Devils Pond community in Oglethorpe County, Georgia. In 1962 the family moved to Maxeys, Georgia when Joe began to work for Dekalb Seed Company.
Dorothy dedicated her life to her greatest love, her family. Dorothy and Joe had seven children. She was involved in every aspect of her children's daily lives and this continued with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. This dedication to her family was recognized by her being awarded "Homemaker of the Year" in 1969 by the Lexington Women's Club and in 2003 "Family of the Year" awarded by the Tenth District of the Georgia Federation of Women's clubs.
Dorothy was very active in the church and community. She has been a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church since 1951. Dorothy was a member of the Maxeys Women's Club (charter member), Ladies Aid Society, Maxeys Community Club, Red Hat Club and Historic Oglethorpe. She and Joe also enjoyed playing bridge for many years with friends in Maxeys and recently she played with the ladies in Athens.
In addition to her parents, husband and brother she was preceded in death by her daughter, Kathryn Gorman Plotkin and son-in-law, Leonard Plotkin.
Dorothy is survived by her six other children: two daughters; Mary Ann Steele and her husband George of Elko, Georgia, Diana O'Neil and her husband Mike of Alpharetta, and four sons, Joseph R. Gorman and his wife Sharon of Greensboro, Georgia, Thomas J. Gorman and his wife Robin of Destin, Florida, Daniel J. Gorman and his wife Beverly of Maxeys, Georgia, and John B. Gorman and Suzanne Sims of Chattanooga, Tennessee. She also is survived by 20 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. Dorothy is survived by two sisters, Ruth Pfeifer of Olathe, Kansas and Marilyn Palmer of Indian Trail, North Carolina.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, September 20, 2017 at Lord and Stephens East, 4355 Lexington Road, Athens, Georgia at 12 noon followed immediately by the funeral service in the Lord and Stephens East Chapel at 2 PM and entombment at Athens Memorial Gardens. Dorothy's sons and sons-in-law will serve as pallbearers.
