Obituary for Mary Lynn Dunn

Mary Lynn Dunn, 60, joined her Daddy, The Reverend M. Eugene Dunn in Heaven on Friday afternoon, June 2, 2017. Lynn was born in LaGrange, GA on Easter Monday, April 22, 1957. Lynn attended Indian Creek Elementary School in Clarkston, GA; J. P. Carr Middle School in Conyers, GA; and Rockdale County Comprehensive High School in Conyers, GA in 1975, serving as Vice President of the Student Body her senior year, with the slogans “Win with Lynn” and “Get It Done with Dunn.” She graduated with a degree in Psychology and minor in Public Speaking from Georgia College and State University in 1979 in Milledgeville, GA. During her college career she was an avid participant at The Wesley Foundation and received the Pi Tau Chi National Honor Society in Religion Award.
Early on in her life, Lynn became an avid Bulldog fan! In 1962, she was the named Poster Girl for March of Dimes. During her reign, she did a radio show with Frankie Avalon in Atlanta. She was also a guest on WSB TV’s The Officer Don Show. She was an honored guest as a 5 year old at numerous civic clubs in the Atlanta area. She was welcomed at The Governor’s Mansion by Governor and Mrs. Ernest Vandiver.
Her physical disability did not keep her from being a world-wide traveler, traveling to many countries in Europe and the Holy Land. She spent a summer in Bournemouth, England with her family on a Ministerial Exchange.
Lynn was invited many times to various organizations, clubs and churches to give her personal testimony as a young woman confined to her wheelchair her entire life. In 1989-90 she was named Madison County Pilot Club Disabled Professional Woman of the Year. She served on the Citizen Advocacy Committee of Clarke County for several years.
Lynn was employed by the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Augusta, GA, administering psychological testing to the men and women patients on the Spinal Cord Injury Unit. Being the daughter of a United Methodist Minister, wherever the Bishop sent her Father, she found employment. It was a pleasure for her to be an employee of the United Methodist Center in Atlanta, an employee of Athens Federal Savings and Loan in Athens.
She served many years as an At-Large delegate to the North Georgia Annual Conference. She was a certified Lay Speaker in the United Methodist Church. The love of her life was being involved in her local church.
Her love of volunteerism was started while she was in High School serving as Candy Striper at Westbury Nursing Home, Conyers, GA. She volunteered for 9 years at Athens Regional Medical Center and approximately the last 5 years at St. Mary’s Hospice House in Athens, GA.
She was predeceased in death by her late Father, The Reverend M. Eugene Dunn, her maternal grandparents, Henry (Snip) and Thelma McKinnon Williams, her paternal grandparents, F. Marion and Estelle Bradley Dunn. She is also survived by her mother, Louise Williams Dunn, Athens, her sister, Kathy Dunn O’Bryan (Doug), Athens, and the “loves of her life,” her nephew, David Franklin, Athens, and her niece, Ashley Lynn Franklin, Detroit, MI.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 4, 2017, at Lord and Stephens West Funeral Home Jimmy Daniel Road from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, June 5, 2017 at the Young Harris Memorial United Methodist Church, Prince Avenue, Athens, at 3:00 p.m. She will be buried at Oconee Hill Cemetery, Athens. Contributions can be made in memory of Lynn Dunn to Our Daily Bread 355 Pulaski Street Athens, GA 30601, which her Father created during his tenure as District Superintendent of the Athens Elberton District in the early 1980s; or the Young Harris Memorial United Methodist Church 973 Prince Avenue Athens, GA 30606.
