Obituary for Eleanor Gilmore Vezey

Eleanor Vezey of Athens, GA, a wife, mother, and friend, went to be with the Lord on October 29, 2016. Though her body was 89 when she passed, her Southern Belle mindset and exuberant spirit never advanced beyond age 25. Eleanor was a devoted wife to husband Stanley for 67 years, and their two sons and their life accomplishments were a tremendous source of pride and joy for her. Whether it was playing bridge, shopping or dragging husband Stan on another cruise, (which she said he enjoyed) she never ran out of energy or enthusiasm. Her two sons learned at an early age that there was no use in arguing with a Southern Belle.
Born in Dallas, TX on August 13, 1927, she married Stan on August 2, 1947 at the tender age of 19. Stan’s career moved them throughout the U.S. but they settled down in Gainesville, GA in 1965. Eleanor cherished the memories of living on Lake Lanier where there were countless bridge clubs, football games and fishing excursions. In 1980 they moved to Athens where they would spend the rest of their days, and though a proud Texan, Eleanor considered Athens home, delighting in UGA events and entertaining friends and colleagues. Eleanor enjoyed meeting and talking with all kinds of people and especially loved traveling the world. In her final years when travel was difficult, her eyes lit up hearing about the travel adventures of others. She will be remembered by all who knew her as a vivacious soul who loved life and the people she shared it with.
Eleanor was preceded in death by her husband Stan and her son, Dale. She is survived by her son, Allen (Jean) and grandchildren Sarah (Dan) Schacher, Russ Hardy and Josie (Dennis) Bahnke, all of Alaska. She also leaves behind loving care giver Blanca Puckett, care giver Henrietta Hawes, her dear cousin Harry (Marianna) Gilmore of Michigan, and Texas in-laws she considered her own family: brother Wendell Nedderman, nephews Howard, John, Jeff and Eric Nedderman and niece Lou Johnson and her husband Ronnie who enjoyed favorite nephew status. Eleanor’s dear friends are too numerous to mention, but please know that she treasured your time and conversation. In celebration of her life, she would like to see all the menfolk of Athens take their wives out to dinner, or on a cruise, or both.
A memorial service will be held at Lord and Stephens Funeral Home (East) at 1:30 on Thursday, Nov 3. All can honor Eleanor’s memory by taking an adventure they’ve always dreamed of as she believed the world was too big to stay in any one place for too long.
Lord and Stephens, East is in charge of arrangements.
