Mrs. Martha M. Newsome died May 10, 2016, after a long life and a brief illness. Originally from Sylacauga, Alabama, where she was born on June 5, 1924, she was the wife of the late Professor George L. Newsome, Jr. who taught at the University of Georgia from 1958 until his retirement. Martha was a graduate of Judson College in Alabama with a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry. Martha taught elementary as well as high school students in Alabama prior to and in the early years of her marriage to Professor Newsome. She also worked during World War II as a chemist for a major chemical company conducting defense research. She was a wife, mother and homemaker, as well. She was an artist, a scientist, a teacher, mother, grandmother, enthusiastic gardener, and a lover of nature and wildlife. Martha is survived by her daughters, Professor Elizabeth Newsome of California and Mary Sloan of Kansas, her son, retired educator, teacher and consultant, George L. Newsome, III of Athens, and her grandson, Michael A. Sloan, who is an attorney in Wichita, KS. Graveside services will be held in Athens Memory Gardens, Monday, May 16, 2016 at 11AM where she will be buried beside her husband.
